What is Rosemary?
Rosemary is an aromatic Mediterranean herb. Its essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and is far too strong to use neat, so it is always diluted in a carrier oil such as castor, coconut or almond oil. It has become one of the most searched hair ingredients in Pakistan over the last few years.
What does Rosemary do for hair?
- Gives the scalp a fresh, stimulated feel during massage
- Supports thicker, fuller-looking hair with regular use
- Pairs well with castor oil, which coats strands and reduces breakage
- Light scent that washes out with one shampoo
What does the research say?
In a 2015 randomised trial of about 100 men with pattern hair loss, rosemary oil and 2% minoxidil both increased hair count after six months, and rosemary caused less scalp itching. It was a small study on a specific condition, so treat rosemary as supportive care, not a medical treatment.
How do you use Rosemary on hair?
- Use a ready-diluted oil, or mix 3–5 drops of rosemary essential oil into 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
- Part your hair and apply to the scalp section by section.
- Massage with your fingertips for 5 minutes.
- Leave for at least 2 hours or overnight, then shampoo.
- Repeat 2–3 times a week for at least 8–12 weeks before judging results.
Who should be careful?
- Never apply undiluted essential oil to the scalp.
- Patch test on the inner arm 24 hours before first use.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding? Ask your doctor before using essential oils.
