What is Red Onion?
Onion juice for hair is a classic home remedy in Pakistan, but raw juice smells strong and can irritate the scalp. Infused onion oils and deodorised onion extracts in shampoos offer the same idea in a form that is easier to use and wash out.
What does Red Onion do for hair?
- Conditions a dry, tight-feeling scalp
- Helps strengthen weak, brittle strands
- Helps reduce hair fall caused by breakage
- Works well with kalonji and coconut oil
What does the research say?
A small 2002 study found that topical onion juice helped regrowth in some people with patchy hair loss (alopecia areata). That is a medical condition that needs a dermatologist; for everyday breakage, onion works best as part of a gentle oiling and washing routine.
How do you use Red Onion on hair?
- Apply onion hair oil to the scalp 2–3 times a week.
- Massage for 5 minutes and leave for 1–2 hours or overnight.
- Wash with a sulfate-free onion shampoo to remove oil and scent.
- Use the shampoo alone on non-oiling days.
Who should be careful?
- Raw onion juice can sting or irritate — patch test first.
- Stop if the scalp becomes red, itchy or burning.
